Q: How do I find people who are doing similar roles to me in other departments?

A: Use GCS Connect to search for job titles or skills.

Q: How do I know what Discipline I’m part of?

A: Your line manager should be able to tell you which discipline (in other words, specialist area) your current role most closely aligns to. You can also read about the different disciplines on the GCS Website.

Q: How do I build a great network of colleagues?

A: Use GCS Connect to search for colleagues by department, skills, discipline or region and then reach out to them. Ensure you keep an eye open for any cross-civil service events, attending these are great for building your network. Get involved with your discipline and any events they may put on. You might also ask your line manager or head of discipline to help you find a buddy who could introduce you to their network.

Q: How do I know what is happening across the GCS?

A: Sign up to the GCS Newsletter, attend the regular GCS calls and regularly visit the GCS website.

Q: How can I make an impact and build my profile across the GCS?

A: Ensure your GCS Connect profile is up-to-date with your skills so that other members can find you. Volunteer (with your line manager’s support, of course) to work on discrete projects, either with the central GCS team, your discipline or a team in another organisation. Offer to share your skills with colleagues. Write a blog or case study or record a vlog for the website.

Q: Where do I find job opportunities in GCS? 

A: All externally advertised posts will be on CS jobs. Visit Government communication jobs on the GCS website to view other roles or project opportunities available through expressions of interest, loans, secondments or shadowing opportunities.
