A five-week Switch placement that transformed my career

Ruby reflects on her five-week placement at the EU Relations, Constitution and Propriety Press Office, Cabinet Office.
Why did you choose to do a placement?
In July 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to spend five weeks shadowing the EU Relations, Constitution and Propriety Press Office.
I was eager to broaden my horizons and gain wider Civil Service and ministerial experience. When I found the opportunity advertised in the Gov Comms newsletter, I knew it was exactly what I needed. The application process was straightforward and supportive, and after initial conversations with the team, we quickly moved into planning how to make the most of my time there.
How has it accelerated your career?
This experience has genuinely transformed my approach to government digital communications and significantly developed my skillset. From my very first day, I was thrown into meaningful work, supporting the Elizabeth Emblem announcement. This included travelling to Northern Ireland to interview a family whose father’s sacrifice was deeply moving. This experience was both humbling and eye-opening, showing me the profound human stories behind government recognition programmes
This opportunity has been career-defining. I’ve returned to my department with enhanced skills, broader perspective, new ideas and renewed enthusiasm for digital communications.
What key knowledge did you gain from your placement?
The five weeks were intensely rewarding. Each week brought new challenges that stretched my abilities. I captured content at Civil Service Live, supported two major ministerial visits including the UK/EU trade deal announcement at New Covent Garden Market, and had the privilege of documenting the historic appointment of the first female Astronomer Royal at the Royal Observatory, which resulted in a photo I took being printed in a national newspaper! These weren’t just photo opportunities – they were genuine learning experiences about how different departments approach stakeholder engagement and public communication.
What struck me most was the team’s collaborative approach and willingness to involve me fully in their work. They trusted me with significant responsibilities, from filming and photography to content creation and stakeholder liaison. This hands-on experience has given me confidence in areas I’d never explored before.
What is your advice for people wanting to participate?
I’d encourage anyone considering a similar opportunity to go for it – the learning and development you’ll gain is invaluable.
In my case, the team were exceptional. From day one, they welcomed me as a valued team member whose contributions mattered. They created an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and taking on new challenges.
My sincere thanks to the Cabinet Office press team for five weeks that I’ll never forget!
